Ben Harris, MA, LCPC
“The transformation that takes place during treatment is amazing to observe, and I feel perpetually honored to be a part of the change that each person experiences. My goal for each treatment session is to have patients walk away with some piece of information, some improved perception of their strength, something that will allow them to challenge and ultimately overcome the anxiety that has kept them from learning, laughing, and living.”
Approach to Therapy
Ben’s primary concern is that each patient who works with him obtains the most comprehensive and successful care possible. To this end, he spends a great deal of time learning about his patients’ needs in order to understand fully how their lives are impacted. Ben uses highly effective, evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and exposure-based treatments, and he works continuously to adapt the treatment plan to match his patients’ progress and current needs. Doing so allows Ben’s patients to move through treatment quickly and efficiently. Ben also places great value on incorporating humor into treatment, because “when you’re laughing at your anxiety, it loses a bit of its hold on you.”
Experience and Training
Ben received his Master of Arts in Psychology from Northern Illinois University, where he first discovered his passion and talent for working with people who struggle with OCD and anxiety. He has devoted his career to becoming increasingly knowledgeable and skilled in his treatment approaches. Ben has completed specialized trainings through the International OCD Foundation and Trichotillomania Learning Center, and he regularly attends conferences to ensure that he is up to date on the newest treatment interventions. Prior to his work at The OCD & Anxiety Center, Ben worked at The Anxiety Treatment Center of Greater Chicago; he also worked at a private practice in a rural Illinois community for several years, where he was one of the only clinicians in the area who provided CBT and exposure therapy. While working in this rural community, Ben gave back by offering a free support group for families and friends of individuals suffering from OCD and anxiety. Ben is a member of the International OCD Foundation, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, and the Trichotillomania Learning Center. He treats patients aged 2 years through adulthood.
In addition to his clinical work, Ben enjoys presenting both locally and nationally to help increase knowledge and awareness regarding various topics related to OCD and anxiety disorders. He is also a vetted expert for PediaSource, a one-of-a-kind technology-enabled platform that connects parents to experts via the phone nationwide. Experts on PediaSource’s panel are leaders in their fields in Child and Adolescent Behavior, Learning, and Development
